Kindy Talk Wowed the W.O.W. Community
Kuala Lumpur – on 14 and 15th of July, Kindy Talk training team was offered to conduct a course for stay-at-home women of Lembah Subang. The stay-at-home women are a part of Women of Will (WOW) community funded by Khazanah Scholarship Alumni Association (KSAA). The training was a joint collaboration between Dr. Nur Aainaa Syafini binti Mohd Radzi, an alumni of KSAA, and Centre for Modern Languages Kindy Talk Training Team, led by Dr. Noor Raha Mohd. Radzuan. The training team made up of a few other key trainers which include Ms. Wan Jumani Fauzi, as the Lead Trainer, and other trainers cum facilitators – Dr. Anita Abdul Rani (also core trainer for Heart Intelligence module), Ms. Ezihaslinda Ngah, Ms. Nursyaheedah Muhammad Isa and Ms. Nuradiba Mohd Noor (Graduate Intern). Mohammad Syazwi Mohd Rafaee, the liaison officer of KSAA were also present during the two-day course.
A proven Kindy Talk module that has been customised to suit the needs of women in PPR Lembah Subang was used in the course so that they can generate income by being a caregiver who can speak English. The objectives of the workshop are to increase participants’ knowledge in English language and storytelling; to develop participants’ English communication and storytelling skills; to enhance the participants’ confidence in using English in their daily communication and storytelling with children; and to improve participants’ spirituality and relationship with Allah. The other main objective is to give children from low and medium income family an opportunity to also be exposed to early childhood education activities in English while under the caregiver’s supervision. Most of the participants who came operate their day cares at their own place of residences.
There were eighteen participants whose age range between early twenties to early sixties who mostly came from Projek Perumahan Rakyat (PPR) Lembah Klang. There were also participants who came from outside of the area and which was to the training team surprise, as far as Penang! The training which took place at Life College Ara Damansara lasted for two days (Saturday and Sunday). Even though it was done during weekend and supposed to be their off days, the participants gave their full commitment to all the activities conducted by the trainers.
Among the topics covered during the workshop were Heart Intelligence, Building Self-Confidence, Disciplining Children, and other topics which incorporated the main skills (reading, speaking, listening and writing) for strengthening their English language command. On the second day which was also the last day of the programme, the participants showcased their talents on practising what they had gained during the workshop with real audience – the children. They were judged by Kindy Talk training leader, Dr. Noor Raha Mohd. Radzuan, as well as guest judges Madam Norsheila Abdullah (President of Persatuan Pengasuh Berdaftar Malaysia) and Madam Nurul Nadiah Mohd Azib (alumni of KSAA). The participants also received some prizes from the organising team based on their group performance as well best individual’s showcase with the children.
The reflections of their wonderful spirit could be seen clearly on their cheerful faces. They expressed their gratitude for being given the opportunities to participate in the program as most of them never had the experience of attending such a course. The Kindy Talk training team hope to reach out to more stay-at-home women in the future because of the belief that if you educate a woman, you will educate a nation (an African proverb).
