School Visit from SK Balok Baru
School visit will never be exciting if conducted in small group. On 18 April 2017, three buses filled with 108 Year Six pupils and 12 accompanied teachers arrived at Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) Gambang Campus for a School Visit programme. Organised by the Community Engagement Section of English Language Department, Centre for Modern Languages and Human Sciences (CMLHS), the large troop was welcomed with open arms with its aim were to expose the pupils on the ethos of university life as well as to motivate them in achieving academic success.
The programme officially began with an opening ceremony which was held at Auditorium, UMP Library Gambang Campus. Deputy Dean Academic, Dr Aini Ahmad delivered a welcoming speech followed by a motivational talk session by CMLHS Senior Lecturer, Dr Norrihan Sulan. The favourite part of the programme was surely the highlight of the day, the Campus Tour at the following places: UMP Library, UMP Gallery, Mandarin Language and Cultural Centre (MLCC) and FKASA Laboratory. Facilitating the fruitful tour were four CMLHS language teachers, Mdm. Hanisah Bon (Kasbon), Ms. Nurkarimah Yusof, Mdm. Nor Suhardiliana Sahar and Ms. Fathiah Izzati Mohamad Fadzillah as well as 13 volunteered UMP students. The school pupils were divided into four groups in which facilitators were assigned to lead the walking tours to each place in rotation. Electric bicycle demonstration and unique Chinese tea ceremony were among the absolute eye-catcher! Besides that, the pupils also learnt about soils and basic road construction at the laboratory.
At the end of the day, the school teachers were very pleased as the students had been very engaged especially with the Campus Tour. Certainly, it is hoped that this programme has inspired the pupils to keep learning and has given them purpose and guidance for their upcoming higher education studies.
