German for Engineers Preparatory Course
Together with our partner in Germany, the University of Applied Science in Karlsruhe, Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) is offering a German-Malaysian double degree in automotive and mechatronics engineering. Part of this program is the flying faculty, where Professors from Germany come to UMP to teach advanced engineering courses of their specific field. Based on remarks from the German professors as well as from students who participated in this program in previous years, there was a significant language barrier when it comes to the German technical language. To support the program, Mr Timo Mueller and Ms Shaimaa Fouad conducted a four-day German for Engineering course for the automotive and mechatronics engineering students from 4th - 8th February 2017.
On the first day of this preparatory course, students were introduced to the GACC program through a short television documentary about the program. The real challenge of the course was for the students to learn German engineering vocabulary. Without proper know-how of the terms and specific way of expression, engineering students will not be able to discuss problems, understand lectures and answer examination questions. The primary objective of this course was to gain experience about the teaching of engineering German itself and the specific need of the students. This gained knowledge shall later be used when the ‘German for Engineers’ course is included in the curriculum of the double degree program.
