UMP; Communitising Science and Technology to Enhance The Quality of Stem Education
Pekan, 24-25 July 2018 - Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) is a technological university with niche area in engineering. As a university focusing on science and technology, UMP has organized a workshop called “Menyemai Cinta Ilmu Sains dan Teknologi”. The objective of this workshop is to create a platform for knowledge-sharing between UMP experts and educators aiming at improving teaching and learning techniques for these subjects; Science, Technology, and Mathematics. The organizing of this workshop is in line with one of UMP's sustainability goals which is to ensure the sustainability of talents available in UMP can be exploited by the local community and at the same time to improve current practice in teaching of Science and Mathematics in secondary schools.
The workshop was attended by 58 teachers from 57 schools around Pekan and Kuantan districts. The workshop was successfully realized through the cooperation of Jabatan Jaringan Masyarakat dan Industri (JJIM), Pusat Bahasa Moden dan Sains Kemanusiaan (PBMSK) and Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Pahang (JPN). One of the participants, Rosilawati Binti Othman, felt that this workshop was meaningful in improving teachers' understanding on the importance of Science and Mathematics hence inculcating the sense of love to God and appreciating every God’s creation. ‘Apart from that, the course has opened up a new chapter by improving our methods of teaching Science and Mathematics as a process of proving the Creator's magnificence power and the true concept of God. Finally, I realized that the final impact of Science and Maths education is to strengthen students’ faith and devotion to Allah SWT as stated in Falsafah Pendidikan Kebangsaan (FPK). She added that, ‘such workshops should continue by involving more teachers and are not limited to only those who are teaching Science, Technology, and Mathematics.’
