An English Language Programme with Students of Ningxia University
English language is a must for international students to survive in teaching and learning in a foreign land. Therefore, a short English language programme was prepared for a delegation of 15 students from Ningxia University, China. The students who arrived in Malaysia on 28 August 2018, stayed for one semester in Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), and were attached to the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. In collaboration with UMP International Office (IO), the Department of English Language, Centre for Modern Languages and Human Sciences offered a 42-hour English language programme as part of IO mobility programme. The main objective of the programme is to prepare the students for the educational experience in UMP. Four English language instructors, Dr Hafizoah Kassim, Dr Noor Raha Mohd Radzuan, Madam Noor Suhardiliana Sahar and Madam Alia Najaa Md Nor were involved in preparing the module for the English Language Programme and the running of it. This short programme focuses on technical-based language skills and knowledge such as technical description, process explanation and presentation skills. These skills and knowledge are essential for both spoken and written communication in the engineering context. During the programme, the students were exposed to the use of technology, experiential learning, and project-based learning. It is hoped that the students were able to gain sufficient skills and knowledge through the programme.
