First Year Seminar (FYS)
As a competency-based technical university that specializes in the fields of engineering and technology, Universiti Malaysia Pahang is committed to ensure a successful journey for every student. Therefore, First Year Seminar was set up with its ambitions are to help new students to adapt to the new tertiary learning environment and to prepare them to face challenges to be successful engineers.
The transition from school to university may prove to be a challenge for students. Due to the inability to adapt to the new learning environment, it may result in students dropping out or being left behind. By giving first year students exposure and engaging them in campus life may become a catalyst to nurture academic excellence culture and successful assimilation into the community (Pascarella & Terenzini, 2005; Hunter & Linder, 2005).
FYS has been offered since academic session 2013/2014 and was organised by Centre for Academic Innovation & Competitiveness (CAIC). However, starting academic session 2016/2017, the responsibility has been passed on to Soft Skills Department, Centre for Modern Languages and Human Sciences.
The First Year Seminar at University Malaysia Pahang aims to:
- introduce first year students to the instruction, research, services and vision & mission of the university and how they relate to teaching and learning in and outside the classroom to increase students’ understanding and participation in the full vision & mission of the university,
- provide first year students an opportunity for meaningful dialogue with faculty members, administrative staff, student bodies and alumni members,
- expose first year students to pertinent lifelong learning skills which can be applied in various aspects of their academic and campus life.
GUIDE FOR STUDENTS
The First Year Seminar is a compulsory (Hadir Wajib), no credit course for first year students (diploma and first degree level). The assessment is based on Attendance and students will get a final grade of Comply/ Non-Compliance (KY/KT). The course will only be offered in the first semester and failing to meet the requirements will render students as Non-Compliance to the regulations of the course.
The seminar is divided into two specific components which are Faculty-based Modules
(Week 1 – Week 7) and Learning Skills Modules (Week 8 – Week 14). For the former, it is compulsory for students to register for all five (5) modules and for the latter component the students are required to choose only five (5) modules from the list of modules offered. If the students complete a total of ten (10) modules – [five (5) Faculty-based modules and five (5) Learning Skills modules], the added value is that UCS1110 First Year Seminar will appear in the students’ transcript as a course that the students have audited. In addition to that, the students will be given two (2) certificates; one for Faculty-based modules and another one for Learning Skills modules.
For the Faculty-based Modules, please refer to the schedule provided by faculty. However, for the Learning Skills Modules, the students have to register by themselves. The registration date for Learning Skills Modules starts from 3rd October 2016 until 14th October 2016.
When registering for any of the modules it is advised to check on the time and venue each module is offered so that it will not be in conflict with other registered subjects. Students are also encouraged to look at FYS E-Book provided at the top of FYS System in Students e-community.
