Synopsis

The course aims to equip students with the four language skills (i.e. listening, reading, speaking and writing) and study skills for academic success. The course requires students to read various texts of general topics by incorporating essential reading skills. Study skills such as note-taking and note-making techniques, and active listening skills are also emphasised. Students will also be exposed to thesis-support essays and writing styles and organisation appropriate for their level. Additionally, students will be exposed to oral presentations as individual and group activities.

Objectives

By the end of semester, students should be able to:

  1.  Transfer information from relevant listening texts to nonlinear forms using appropriate vocabulary;
  2.  Apply reading skills and strategies to reading comprehension texts;
  3.  Justify individual points of view insmall group discussion using accurate language and effective group discussion strategies
  4.  Write different types of essayrelevant content, appropriate language, organisation and referencing skills;  and
  5.  Summarise ideas from various
