Synopsis

The course aims to equip students with the four language skills (i.e. listening, reading, speaking and writing) and study skills for academic success. The course requires students to read various texts of general topics by incorporating essential reading skills. Study skills such as note-taking and note making techniques, and active listening skills are also emphasised. Students will also be exposed to thesis-support essays and writing styles and organisation appropriate for their level. Additionally, students will be exposed to presentation skills and e-learning platform will also be introduced as part of the course.

Objectives

By the end of semester, students should be able to:

  1. Analyse specific information from various listening texts using appropriate language.
  2. Apply reading skills to extract and transfer specific information from general texts.
  3. Evaluate information to present clear and detailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects.
  4. Apply appropriate and accurate language in written and/or spoken discourse.
  5. Demonstrate effective presentation skills using appropriate non-verbal cues.
