CEFR Familiarisation Training
20 – 23 December 2016. The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages was an answer to the question of how to overcome the problem of unstandardized course descriptions or test levels and achievements among schools, institutions or testing bodies back then in Europe. Therefore, with its success of providing a common yet so descriptive framework of language proficiency levels, it is used by individuals worldwide as a key indicator in producing a solid structure of knowledge, understanding and practice shared by all. Malaysia, in order to follow suit, has the urge to start permeating the CEFR in its own backyard through the delivery of cascade training to English language instructors nationwide. In the case of UMP cascade training, two Master Trainers; Madam Wan Jumani Fauzi and Dr. Noor Raha Mohd. Radzuan enlightened the workshop participants (English Department staff) with every bit of the CEFR know-hows including its core conception of language learning, six levels of framework, usefulness for language learning pedagogy and relevance for curriculum development as well as teaching methodology and assessment. “Out with the old, in with the new” the Department of English Language staff are all set to bring this to fruition!
