24 April 2019 - Consultancy and Training Center of Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) recently held a talk on the essentials of editing and proofreading by Mr Muhammad Zaki Ramli, founder of Proofreaders United at CMLHS Main Lecture Hall in UMP Pekan.
The event began at 2 p.m. with an opening prayer led by Ustaz Ahmad Irfan Ikmal Hisham and a welcoming speech by the Dean, Associate Professor Dr. Muhammad Nubli Abdul Wahab. Lectures and students from UMP and other institutions were among the attendees.
The speaker shared some general insights on editing skills. There were tips given in the talk for anyone who would want to start a career or make some side income from editing work. Firstly, for beginners they were advised to begin without charging any fee. It could be a favour done for friends or acquaintances first, before turning it into paid services. Furthermore, you will learn more things and gain confidence as you progress. Apart from that, the speaker had also taught the audience how to charge accordingly. When setting up the price for our service, we must pay attention to the time spent on doing the work, pages offered and the amount we want to earn right along. On the other hand, there are also challenges in this career. Since this is a service we provide for others or in other word customers and clients, we would have to deal with various demands. Next, as a person who checks others’ work for a living, you might have issues to balance your social life and work life.
Basic Editing Course ended at 5.30 pm and it was concluded that the talk had enlightened everyone on the topic discussed.
