Kindy Talk Roadshow 2019: English for Stem – Unravelling The East Coast Jewels
1. Kelantan Chapter
Kelantan, 6th of July 2019 - Kindy Talk Roadshow (KTR) training team had ventured to Kota Bharu, Kelantan to conduct a programme called Kindy Talk Roadshow 2019: English for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The programme was a joint collaboration between Centre for Modern Languages (CML) KTR training team, led by Dr. Noor Raha Mohd Radzuan and Pertubuhan Pra Sekolah dan Asuhan Kelantan (PERASKO) led by Puan Hajjah Faeezah. The training team was made up of a few other key trainers which include Dr. Wan Jumani Fauzi, the lead trainer of Kindy Talk and other trainers cum facilitators – Dr. Anita Abdul Rani, the core trainer for Heart Intelligence module, Dr. Fatimah Ali, Ms. Farah Liyana Ahmad Azmey and Ms. Aisyah Khaleeda Rosli (Graduate Research Assistant). Kindy Talk Roadshow 2019: English for STEM was held in Pusat Latihan PERASKO, Kota Bharu, Kelantan.
With a full-day knowledge sharing session conducted by KTR training team in collaboration with PERASKO, the programme aimed to introduce English for STEM module to daycare educators from all over Kelantan. English for STEM, as its name suggests, is a training module which provides daycare educators creative alternatives in teaching English for STEM at daycare level based on The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). There were a total of 29 daycare educators in Kelantan registered for the programme aged between 18 to 45 years old. In the morning, the programme started with a welcoming speech by Dr. Noor Raha whereby a brief introduction to Kindy Talk was presented to PERASKO. The two other modules which are Communication English and Effective Story-telling Technique which had been used in the previous 2015 KTP Kindy programme were also being briefly introduced to the participants during this session. However, for the roadshow, the programme focused on the new module which is English for STEM.
After the welcoming speech, the programme proceeded with the first session conducted by Dr. Wan Jumani Fauzi. In this session, she explained on the usage of Talking Body Poster which uses the technology of Augmented Reality (AR). The software that was created for the poster intents to create an interactive experience in learning English for STEM, to overcome the problem of pronunciation among daycare educators and learners while providing an advanced learning method based on technology usage aligned with Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) vision. Apart from that, each participant was given a free sample poster as a part of programme initiative.
Second session was continued by Dr. Anita Abdul Rani on Heart Intelligence module. The module was meant to offer spiritual confidence among the participants. In the session, participants were explained about the true intention of becoming daycare educators. The session managed to instill motivation towards daycare educators in continuing their contribute to the society and also with the hope that the public as well as the daycare themselves can see the deeper meaning of their social duties towards shaping the young minds of our future generation.
In the third session, English for STEM module, there were a lot of activities included in the module and the participants had so much fun participating in the activities. One of the activities was called as Snowball Fight. Since the focus of the new module is on STEM, the theme of the activity revolved around weather; winter, summer, rainy days and windy days. The participants also had their chance to show off their talents in singing activities which involved group activities. It was a great learning experience for both KTR trainers and PERASKO participants. At the end of the programme, the participants were seen to be more confident to speak in English as compared to when they first entered the programme room. Kindy Talk Roadshow 2019 in Kelantan ended at 4:30 p.m. with a huge success.
2. Pahang Chapter
Pahang , 13th July 2019 - Kindy Talk Roadshow (KTR) training team continued their journey to the second location, Pahang. Second location was a successful collaboration between Centre for Modern Languages (CML) University Malaysia Pahang (UMP) and Persatuan Pendidik Awal Kanak-Kanak (PPAKK) Pahang which is currently under the supervision of Puan Zubaidah Husin. The training team consisted of seven members; Dr. Wan Jumani Fauzi, the lead trainer of Kindy Talk and other trainers cum facilitators – Dr. Anita Abdul Rani, the core trainer for Heart Intelligence module, Dr. Noor Raha Mohd Radzuan, Dr. Fatimah Ali, Ms. Ezihaslinda Ngah, Ms. Zarina Mohd Ali and Ms. Aisyah Khaleeda Rosli (Graduate Research Assistant). The programme tentative was held similarly to the one which had been conducted in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. Throughout the programme, the participants were able to grab greater opportunities through activities conducted following the confidence instilled in them.
In English for STEM module, various types of wheater and nursery rhymes were shared with the participants by Dr. Wan Jumani. Among the topics covered during the whole-day programme include Heart Intelligence and English for STEM for strengthening their English language command. In English for STEM module, the participants showcased their talents on singing weather songs in which they had composed during group activities and discussion. The programme was joined by 14 Pahang daycare educators. On that day, high level of hard work was seen from the participants as they showed their dedication towards the programme. For this second roadshow, although the number of participants were no as many as the previous one, the programme still managed to meet its main objectives.
In one of the activities, six groups of participants were formed. After that, they were given several pictures of clothing and were asked to identify the clothing that should be used in specific weather. At the end of the discussion, the participants had managed to share their findings. The programme was a success as the anticipations were met.
3. Terengganu Chapter
Terengganu, 2nd of August 2019, Kindy Talk Roadshow (KTR) training team began their journey to the haven of Keropok Lekor, a state which famously known for its turtle sanctuary, Terengganu. The seven trainers involved in the programme were Dr. Noor Raha Mohd Radzuan, Dr. Wan Jumani Fauzi, Dr. Anita Abdul Rani, Dr. Fatimah Ali, Ms. Ezihaslinda Ngah, Ms. Zarina Mohd Ali and Ms. Aisyah Khaleeda Rosli. Terengganu is the final location for Kindy Talk Roadshow 2019: English for STEM and was joined by 38 daycare educators from all over Terengganu. It was a great collaboration between Centre for Modern Languages (CML) Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) and Persatuan Pengasuh Negeri Terengganu (PPNT) which was led by its current president, Puan Laila Akma Abd Malek.
The programme was held the next day, on the 3rd of August. It started at 8:30 a.m. and ended at 5:00 p.m. Just like in the two previous locations, Terengganu participants were very proactive and committed in making the programme a success. They were able to learn lessons from the team work during English for STEM module. Other than learning new nursery rhymes and seasonal clothing in the module, the participants managed to learn communication skills through Speed Talk activity where they were tasked to ask and give responses within the time given by the trainer. At the end of the session, the participants were able to effectively respond with cofidence to their fellow participants in English.
Apart from that, through the activities which were conducted by KTR training team in English for STEM session, all the participants managed to come up with their own version of ‘Thunder Song’. Through the process of completing the song, guidance and corrections were given by the facilitators. This was to ensure the participants used the correct forms of English at the end of the activity. Towards the end of the programme, participants were given certificate of participation from Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP). The programme ended at 5:00 p.m. and it was an achievement for KTR training team as the Kindy Talk Roadshow 2019: English for STEM had managed to meet its objectives and goals which is to provide to the East Coast region daycare educators alternatives in teaching English for STEM for daycare children.
